Maysha Mohamedi and Sebastian Baden in Conversation

Published Thursday, May 9, 2024

Mute Counsel is a pop-up exhibition of nine new paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist, which opened during Berlin Gallery Weekend 2024. In a conversation with Sebastian Baden, Director of Schirn Frankkfurt, Mohamedi delves into her process, inspiration, and color palette amongst her works, which use reality as an abstract source–hearkening back to abstraction techniques reminiscent of Wassily Kandinsky.

The artist’s fascination with the brain’s processing of visual information, stemming from her academic background in neuroscience, drives her to question how reality is deconstructed and reconstructed through infinitesimal differences, yet perceived as a seamless whole. “All visual processing is about calculating difference,” Mohamedi has explained, “How do you determine and locate edges? Everything depends on the edge.”
